Port Angeles, Wash., January 15, 2020, 15th Annual Meeting of Voices for Veterans

Determined to make another successful year to help homeless and needy veterans on the north Olympic Peninsula, Voices for Veterans held its 15th annual meeting at the Veterans Center in Port Angeles on January 15,2020.

The day began its annual meeting to reflect on the accomplishments made during 2019, release its annual report, hold nomination and election of officers and directors, and prepare new strategy in the effort to help homeless veterans and their families for 2020.

The annual meeting aimed to bring together all volunteers and thank them for their hard work over the past year and motivate them for the next year’s upcoming events.

John Braasch, President of Port Angeles based Voices for Veterans, took the time to individually thank each and every volunteer for all their contributions.

He concluded, “If we can make the difference to one veteran, it’s a great day,” He said. “Thank you for your endless efforts and continued support.”

Over 794 veterans were helped during three Stand Down events in 2019.

A Stand Down is a one-day operation that is offered three times a year in May, July and October. It is designed to provide direct services and connect veterans to over 20 different organizations all located in one place ranging from medical, dental, housing, employment, veteran benefits, to counseling, haircuts, food, pet supplies, and clothing. Veterans can ask questions and obtain resources that they may not have known was available to them.

All funding is received through donations and grants, and those moneys are put it back in for supplies, equipment, and clothing. It’s a special day for homeless veterans but also a day for volunteers who want to give back and say thank you to our veterans.

“Our goal is to serve homeless veterans and it’s nice to know that we are serving more homeless vets, but it’s also tragic to know that there are more homeless vets to serve, however, it reinforces the demand for things like this to happen,” said Jim Dickson, volunteer at for Voices for Veterans. “We need to do everything we can for them.”

Our organization was started after our first Stand Down event in October of 2004 it was a very successful event; we helped many homeless veterans and their families. We also helped many veterans in need of assistance who were on the verge of homelessness.

Voices for Veterans is a non-profit corporation in the State of Washington made up of volunteers who are dedicated to assisting the homeless veteran population on the north Olympic Peninsula via the avenue of a Stand Down.
